People can believe whatever they want.
Still...
Trinity believing Christians…
Is it at all possible, in your mind, that the Trinity doctrine was the Christian attempt to call Jesus “God” while also making sense of the fact that he prayed to God, while also trying to remain monotheistic?
Because that’s how it looks from the outside…
I can imagine a Rabbi talking to a Christian in like 200 AD…
Rabbi: “So, you believe Jesus was God, but also that the Father is God? And you believe the Holy Spirit is God?
Christian: “Yes.”
Rabbi: “So, you’re a polytheist, just like the pagans you converted.”
Christian: “No no no… we believe in one God.”
Rabbi: “But you believe in three.”
Christians: “No, three persons, one God.”
Rabbi: “That doesn’t make sense. What is God then?”
Christian: “You’d have to read some of the pagan philosophy our converts brought with them from Athens. It won’t make anymore sense but you’ll feel really smart explaining it to people.”
